FAQ

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and educational support to families before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas do not provide medical care, but they work alongside healthcare providers to ensure parents feel informed and supported.

How is a doula different from a midwife or nurse?

While midwives and nurses provide medical care, doulas focus solely on emotional, physical, and informational support. We help with comfort measures, birth education, and postpartum adjustment, but we do not perform medical procedures.

What does a birth doula do?

A birth doula supports mothers throughout labor and delivery. This includes providing emotional encouragement, comfort techniques (like massage or positioning), breathing guidance, and advocacy for your birth preferences. The goal is to create a calm, empowering, and positive birth experience.

When should I hire a birth doula?

Many families hire a birth doula in the second trimester, but anytime during pregnancy is fine. Early booking ensures time for prenatal meetings and planning your birth preferences.

Does a doula replace my partner or family?

No. A doula complements your support system. We give continuous, professional guidance so your partner, family, or friends can focus on being present without feeling overwhelmed.

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula provides support after the baby is born, helping parents adjust to life with a newborn. This includes newborn care, breastfeeding guidance, maternal recovery, emotional support, household help, sibling care, and education on parenting skills.

How long do postpartum services last?

Services vary. Some families schedule a few hours per day or overnight for a few weeks, while others hire a doula for several months. Many doulas also offer phone or virtual support after in-home visits end.

Do doulas provide medical care?

No. Doulas do not perform medical procedures or give medical advice. We work alongside your healthcare team to support your emotional, physical, and educational needs.

How do I know if I need a doula?

If you want continuous support, guidance, and confidence during birth or postpartum, a doula can help. Many families hire doulas to reduce stress, improve birth outcomes, and feel empowered during this transformative time.
